Coloring with Varaitions

For this tutorial you will need the  Variations Filter ,  Paint Shop Pro  and a gray scale image. This is a Photoshop Filter. For help using Photoshop Filters with PSP, click  here

Here is the image I am using for this tutorial. If you would like to use this image, right click, save as and save it to your harddrive:

When you begin this or any other projects, you should save as you go. Start your project and then File/Save as and save it to a folder where you normally keep PSP images. Then save (CTRL S) after every step or so. Saving often really helps cut down on the frustration of losing it when or if those lovely Illegal Operations happen or your 'puter just feels like freezing up!!

Let's begin:

Open the image you wish to color. Using the Freehand Selection Tool,   Selection Type set to Smart Edge, Feather 0, Antialias and Sample Merged both unchecked, outline the rose (if using the above graph).

When finished, you will have marching ants around your selection. This will be the selection we color.

Now, go to Image, Filters, Adjust, Varaitions

Leave the Midtones radio button selected, and pick the tone you wish to color your rose. I chose "More Red" and "More Magenta" to color my rose. Now you can go Selections, Invert, Image Filters, Adjust Varations and add a tone to the wood surface.

Here's the finished piece:

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial.
